What is a Node Trees? 🌳

In DaVinci Resolve, a node tree is a visual representation of your editing or grading process. It's made up of nodes, each serving a specific purpose like adjusting color or applying effects. These nodes are linked together, forming a sequence that defines how your video is processed.

The great thing about nodes is that they allow for non-destructive editing. You can tweak individual nodes without affecting others, providing a lot of flexibility. This system also helps keep your workflow organized. By looking at the node tree, you can easily understand the order of adjustments and see how each node contributes to the final look of your video.

The node-based workflow in DaVinci Resolve encourages creativity and experimentation. You can add, modify, or remove nodes to try out different effects and styles. This approach offers both precision and freedom, making it a powerful tool for achieving unique and stunning visuals in your video projects.

Node Tree template for basic color grading

This Node Tree is typically used for basic grading. It consists of Noise Reduction nodes on the left, followed by White Balance nodes in a parallel mixer. The top one adjusts temperature, the bottom one adjusts tint. Then there are nodes for curves, color adjustments, a transformation node (I use the Color Space Transform for this), sharpening, and finally, a grain node.

This Node Tree is typically used for grading with LUTs. It consists of Noise Reduction nodes on the left, followed by White Balance nodes in a parallel mixer. The top one adjusts temperature, the bottom one adjusts tint. Then there are nodes for curves, color adjustments, a transformation node (I use the Color Space Transform for this), sharpening, and finally, a grain node.

The LUT node follows the CST (conversion) node. It's designed for the Rec.709 LUT. If you intend to use the LOG LUT, remove the CST and apply the LOG LUT directly to that node as the LOG LUTs contain a conversion baked in. For the best result, I advise creating your own conversion and using LUTs only as a creative layer on top of that.

Node Tree template for using FPE

This Node Tree is typically used for grading with FPE's (Film Print Emulations). It consists of Noise Reduction nodes on the left, followed by White Balance nodes in a parallel mixer. The top one adjusts temperature, the bottom one adjusts tint. Then there are nodes for curves, color adjustments, a transformation node (I use the Color Space Transform for this), sharpening, and finally, a grain node.

The FPE node follows the second CST (conversion) node, changing the Rec.709 signal back to Cineon LOG (or Arri LogC). Just attach the FPE LUT to the specified node and adjust it as you prefer using the key section (opacity). And there you have it!
